Should MLB adopt a more NFL like tie-breaker for wild card teams?
I’m all for an extra game to determine a division winner when 2 teams are tied after 162 games. There should be an outright division champion determined on the diamond.
But when it comes to the wild card selection, playing extra games can be very detrimental to a teams hope for success in the playoffs. This year’s NL situation is an example:
From Yahoo’s MLB page about playoff senarios..
Braves win, Padres win – NL West: Giants at Padres on Monday, Wild card: Loser at Braves on Tuesday
A team could end up with 2 extra games and go into the first round of the playoffs with a completely depleted pitching staff.
So do you think it would be better if MLB adopted a tie-breaker system for wild cards, such as head-to-head record, league record, etc..etc.. etc., and avoid the extra game(s)?
No, I like having it decided on the field rather than on some goofy abstraction like points differential in away games inside your conference but outside your division less the average weight of the offensive line…or however the NFL figures it out.
