I need good advice for upgrading my pc?

I have been using the family pc for 4 years and I think I should upgrade it. It has anthlon x2 64bit 2 gb and a gigabyte 256 mb graphics card I also would like to know if it would be better and cheaper to buy a new pc and sell my old pc or to upgrade it and trade-in all the old parts I would like to have a AMD pheneom ii x 4 but I don’t know if there is anything Better that I can fit into my budget and I also would like to upgrade to 4 gb of ram instead of 2 and upgrade to a 1 gb ghraphics card that will fit into my budget I will use it for a gaming pc over all I would like to keep it under $600 I will use it for gaming purposes

I would say upgrade it, I had a PC quite close to the one you have, and I upgraded it to a Phenom II X4 with a 512MB video card and 4GB memory, and to be able to use these parts I had to buy a new motherboard, and the total came to a little over $600(that is only because I had to buy a new motherboard). If I would have just bought a whole new PC and sold my old one then it would have cost about $800.
