Baseball Card Games?

When I was growing up (in the early 70s) we would “flip” baseball cards to complete our collections stright from wax packs of tOPPS, Fleer, and Donruss (even Hostess), and then on to Upper Deck.

My dad always talked about the games he’d play with his friends in the 50s/60s, but I cannot remember them.

Anyone else know of some baseball card games I can teach my kids this summer as the season rolls around?
Awesome so far–keep them coming!!!

I forgot about the one where one card would land on the others . . .

I think there were two main games that were played.

The topps cards of the 60s and early 70s used to use several different color “fonts” on the team names in each card.

You and your opponent would start with a pile of cards (10, 20 , whatever) and you and your opponent would take turns turning the cards over one by one… whenever the color of the team name of the card you turned over “matched” the color of the top card in the pile, you would win the cards in that pile… and you kept playing until one player ended up with all of the cards.

If none of the cards matched the first time through the flipping, then you would mix the cards up and deal them back out to each player. It didn’t matter which cards you got after the shuffle, because it was a winner take all game anyway.

This game could also be played with more than two players, but the object was the same in any case.

The other thing would be to literally “flip” cards…

You would both stand up, and one of you would “flip” a card to the ground, making it spin around several times while it dropped… it would either land with the front or back of the card showing.

Then the other player would call either “match” or “de-match”… meaning that, when HE flipped his card in the same way, it would either land with the same side facing up as your card (“Match” or with the opposite side facing up from your card (“dematch”)… if he called the match/de-match correctly, he’d get both cards… if he called it incorrectly, YOU’D get both cards.

Both games were actually called “flipping” ( in that first game, we’d say, “I’ll flip ya five” or “I’ll flip ya ten”, depending on how many cards you had to play with).

Those were the two main games that were played in the late 60s/early 70s.

There was a bit of strategy to employ in the first game (or so we thought, lol) , as some colors were more plentiful than others in terms of the team names that appeared on the cards.
