Can a game shop ban a person for playing elsewhere?

My son and his friends enter in Magic: The Gathering (a trading card game) tournaments at a gaming shop every weekend. My son said that the shop owner banned a boy (not my son or his friends) from his shop because he’d played in a tournament at a different shop the previous week. Three sat.’s a month this shop holds them for a $5 or $10 entry fee, and on the other sat. they have a “special” tournament where they charge $25 to enter, I guess this entry fee was too high for the kid & he chose to play at another shop where he could afford the entry. This week when he went back to the first shop, he was told he’s been banned. I thought that was crazy, but my son he said that the owner bans people if he finds out they bought cards from another store, from ebay, online or anywhere other than his shop. The kids aren’t just taking up space on his property, they pay to play and they buy cards from the shop all of the time. Could Target ban you b/c you shopped at Wal-mart??

A business owner can refuse service to anyone for any reason (except an unlawful one, such as race), even if it’s not very smart. Target could ban someone because they shopped at Wal-Mart–but they didn’t get to be Target by being that stupid.
