How can I speed up my internet Connection for online gaming?

I just bought a new laptop (it’s ok for the game I want to play during my free time). The game I want to play is medal of honor allied assault for pc. It’s a very basic old game from I believe 2001. Good FPS. Here are the specs for my new laptop:
Dell N5030
Pentium Duel Core 2.3 T4500
3GB Ram
250 Hardrive
Graphics card: Intel GMA 4500 (I thought it should be able to play the first medal of honor online)
I have windows 7 home edition 64 bit

At my friends house in Ohio, the game runs great (internet must be stronger).
At the college house, I lagg a little bit but on 1 or two servers I’m fine (must be close by)
Anything I could buy to help gain more internet connection?
The router is downstairs and I think that the settings are limited. I don’t know if there is a way to maximize the settings for my benefits so please help me out.

You mainly only can go as fast as the internet provider can provide.

Make sure no one is using P2P programs such as limewire or utorrent.

LAN not WLAN.

And for what ever game you are playing online with make sure you have the right ports open on your router.
