Is it impossible for me to get a new graphics card?

I know very little about graphics cards, and I’ve heard that on my laptop, I can’t fit a new graphics card, is this true? My current graphics card is Mobile intel(R) 965 express chipset family. If you need any other details just ask. Help would be much appreciated, as this graphics card runs the game I want to play VERY poorly.

yes,you are correct in thinking you cant fit a new graphics card in your laptop however manufactuers have realised this and some have began to release external graphic cards which most of the time fit in your laptops express card slot
one such device is the “asus xg station”( http://crave.cnet.co.uk/laptops/0,39029450,49286742,00.htm) and this houses a nvidia geforce 7900gs which isnt a bad card allthough it only uses the direct x 9 api however it will easily run games such as crysis and age of conan which are quite demanding
the unit connects to the express card slot and then from the xg station a dvi lead goes to your monitor
however since the xg station houses a pci-express x16 bus interface you can actually replace/upgrade the current card with something more prefred however there are some cards that may not work or even fit so check on the asus website for more info(http://uk.asus.com/)
another external graphics card worth checking out is the “AMD XPG”( http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/06/06/amd_launches_xgp/) which in my opinion is the best there is,it comes with a AMD ATI Radeon HD 3870 GPU and 512mb of gddr3 memory and this also supports direct x 10 and pixel and shader model 4.1
the xpg is a nice looking and compact unit and connects to your laptop via a adapter to a 16 lane express card slot,so a problem may be compatibility here so again check the amd website for more info
the popular laptop and desktop pc manufactuer Fujitsu Siemens have also released a external graphics card in the shape of the “amilo graphics booster”( http://gizmodo.com/391362/fujitsus-amilo-graphicbooster-external-graphics-card-for-easy-laptop-upgrades) which also houses a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870
all these external graphic units dont come cheap though and they each retail for around £200 however this price will drop
so in summary laptop owners will soon be able to run games like the desktops can however you need to work out the cost of your laptop and the external graphics card and then see if its cheaper to buy a gaming desktop,since you can get a decent sli(dual gpu) system with 4gb of ram and a core 2 duo processor for less than £500
if i got a pound for every time i told someone not to buy a laptop for playing games i would be a rich man,however the newer laptops seem to be coming with far superior gpu,s for example i saw a medion laptop in aldi the other week for under £400 which come with a decent dual core processor,2gb ram and more importantly a geforce 9600M mobile graphics adapter,this would easily run todays and tommorows games without any problems
