Perhaps one reason for its popularity is the simple rules of the game. It is a game that can be played alone on the computer. Spider solitaire in particular is very popular.

Amongst the many versions of spider solitaire, Microsoft provides solitaire spider free with its Windows package. Spider Solitaire is played with two decks of cards. When you begin a new solitaire card game, ten stacks of cards, each with one card facing up, are dealt. The remaining cards are placed in five stacks in the lower-right corner of the window and are used when you deal a new row.

Any exposed card may be placed on any next higher card on any of the remaining 9 columns regardless of suit, by right mouse button clicks. It can also be moved to an empty column. A descending sequence of cards of the same suit may be moved as a single card.

The first time you play a game, you’ll have to set your difficulty level by choosing how many suits of cards you want to use. The more suits, the harder the game. The object of the game is to remove cards from play in the fewest moves possible. Line up runs of cards from king through ace in the same suit to remove them. At higher difficulty settings, you can also alternate red and black suits to line up, turn over, and move cards — but you still need runs to remove cards. To move a card, drag the card from one stack to another.

Try turning all cards in a stack as soon as possible to get open space. By clearing off stacks, you can bring more cards into play. Avoid placing lower cards on other cards of a different suit. That blocks them from play until the lower cards are moved.
