In the first edition of “Star Trek: CCG”, how can I rescue my personnel off of a ship assimilated by the Borg?

My friends & I still play the first edition of the “Star Trek: Customizable Card Game”. We use several expansion sets, such as “First Contact” & “The Borg. I’ve poured over the rules and the Decipher website, but I just can’t seem to find the answer to what happens to the non-Borg personnel that remain on a ship once it has been assimilated. I understand that the objective “Assimilate Planet” will assimilate personnel on the planet, but the objective “Assimilate Starship” clearly states that the personnel onboard are NOT assimilated, while the ship itself is. If that is the case, what happens to these non-assimilated personnel? Are they captive? Are they free to fight? Can they be rescued, and if so, how? In the “Borg” expansion set, the rules state that non-Borg affiliations cannot beam through shields of a Borg vessel unless they have a specific card to do so. So, if I wanted to rescue personnel off of an assimilated ship, how would I do so?
