Easy Card Games For Two Kids

How can I teach 5 year olds English?
So I’m 14 (well, almost 15!
) and I work/volunteer at a tutoring/behavior support program twice a week for kids with behavioral problems/disabilites. I mainly work with these two 5 year old boys, who LOVE math cards… They’re SO good at math but since they aren’t enrolled in school they NEED to learn english. They know how to write their names, but that’s about it. I recently found alphabet cards and they LOVE them. (So it turns out they just love any card game!) I’ve been making them name the letter and make the sound of that letter. But I really need something better to work with, because it’s getting old and too easy for them. They don’t like worksheets… Is there any games you know of that I could play with them to help them spell? It can’t be too hard. They don’t even know their full ABC’s yet. Or any techniques?
Any answers appreciated!
A great way to help teach basic words or spelling is to use magnetic letters on a cookie sheet, so they can physically manipulate the letters and will remember it better.
Listing the ABCs in order isn’t as vital as being able to name all the letters. Flashcards are great for that, as you have already discovered.
Are they familiar with the concept of reading? When presented with a book, can they find the front, find the back, recognize that text is read from left to right, etc? These are BASIC things that can be taught just by reading to them.
A fun game for them to play would be to post pictures of animals/objects around the room with the corresponding names. Tell them that the game is to run and touch the word that starts with whatever letter you call out. For example, if you say “E!!” then they will have to touch the picture of the Elephant, because the word has an “e” at the beginning. It’s a good way to get them to remember what the letters look like, and they can have fun running around.
