Basic Common Sense Blackjack Strategy

Common Sense Blackjack Strategy

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games both for online casinos and brick & mortar live table play.  Blackjack is one of the few casino games where the player can affect the outcome of the game by applying various strategies and thereby improving his or her odds.

The house advantage in Blackjack for a six deck shoe is .64% and increasing to an eight deck shoe only adds .02% percent, or .66% advantage.  House advantage means that over time the house will average 6.5 cents per hand in winnings.  A good basic strategy can lower that to about .45% and an advanced blackjack strategy can sometimes even the odds to .01% or less.  Let’s start out slow and go for the big bucks later.

Most dealers at a live table are evaluated by how many hands per hour they can deal.  A new dealer will be able to deal about 60 hands per hour while a seasoned veteran can approach 80.  Some online Blackjack games employ a timer to keep the game pace constant.  Live dealers using an electronic table can usually deal more hands per hour because the dealing, card pickup and shuffling are all done electronically and the mechanical aspect of the game is removed from the equation.  One of the more popular tables in Mexico is a live dealer using real cards that are hand shuffled, dealt live but scanned electronically. For this example I am going to use 70 hands per hour as a base.

With these few stats in mind, let’s talk about money.  Never take more with you than you can afford to lose.  Never gamble when it is necessary for you to win to pay bills or buy food.  The mental pressure will overcome common sense and you will be more likely to make bad wagering decisions and lose.

The amount you bring with you depends upon a variety of factors.  How much can you afford to lose, how long do you want to play and what is the table minimum are the three most important questions you should honestly answer before venturing out.  If you intend to play for 2 hours at a $2 table then you should bring $280.00. (Number of hands per hour X table minimum x length of play)  This assumes you will lose every hand, never double down and refuse insurance.   Losing every hand for 2 hours is almost mathematically impossible even for a beginner.  The better you play the longer you can play and the more you can potentially win.

Another good basic strategy to follow is to decide on a betting strategy and stick to it.  Decide on when you are going to split, double down and bet in insurance.  Keep mental notes of the time it takes for each hand and how much you’re up or down at the close of every hour.  DO NOT VARY YOUR BETS when starting out.  Inconsistent wagering will frustrate you and keep you from making good play decisions.

The following strategy is a condensed version of my “Beginners Strategy”.  If you learn and memorize these few rules you will have a better and more enjoyable gambling outing.  Learn and study the complete list to become even more proficient as these few rules are a good starting point but need to eventually be expanded.

Playing Pairs

Aces & 8′s             Always Split

2′s thru 6′s            Split if the dealer has a 2 thru 6 showing

9′s                         Split if the dealer has 2 thru 9, stay if the dealer has a 7, 10 or Ace (ten                                  meaning 10, Jack, Queen or King)

Playing Hard Hands

Two starting cards that do not hold an Ace

Less than 8            Hit

Ten                         Double Down against a 2 thru 9, else Hit

Eleven                    Double Down against a 2 thru 10, Hit if the dealer has an Ace showing

Twelve                   Stay against a 2 thru 6, hit everything else

13 – 16                  Stay against a dealers 2 – 6, Hit everything else

17 – 21                  Stay

Playing Soft hands

Tip pertaining to starting cards that have an Ace

Ace w/2 or 3         Double down against a dealer 5 or 6

Ace w/4 or 5         Double Down against a dealers 4 thru 6, else Hit

Ace w/ 6                Double Down against dealers 3 thru 6, else hit

Ace w/7                 Stay against dealers 2,7 or 8, Double down against dealers 3 thru 6

Ace w/8 or 9         Stay

By following this basic strategy you can start to observe the tendencies and odds for playing.  Remember that you are playing against the dealer and not the other players.  If a player is making poor calls and not using good judgment do not concern yourself.  A player’s poor call to hit when he should have stayed will not affect your outcome even if you are sitting next to him/her.   You have the same chance of drawing a winning card even if he has just drawn the card you needed.  You can play blackjack online now here
