Card Games Pinochle How To Play
Probability/Odds of an event?
Pinochle is a card game using 2 decks that consists of twelve cards in each of four suits: clubs, hearts, diamonds, and spades. There are two of each ace, king, queen, jack, 10, and 9 in each suit. All cards must be dealt to play the game. The king, queen, jack are “face” cards.
1) what is the probability of being dealt a red face card such as the queen of diamonds?
2) what are the odds of being dealt a king?
Please explain how you got the answer and thanks for helping!
please try to explain odds a little…how do u find odds?
Remember that probability is defined as:
Number of Favorable Outcomes
- – - – - divided by – - – - -
Total number of Possible Outcomes
There are 24 face cards and 24 numbered cards:
Face cards = (J, Q, K) * 4 suits * 2 sets = 24
Numbered cards = (A, 9, 10) * 4 suits * 2 sets = 24
1) What is the probability of being dealt a red
face card such as the queen of diamonds?
Half of the face cards are red, the other half black.
(Red = Hearts and Diamonds, Black = Clubs and Spades)
Since there are 24 face cards, and half of them are “favorable”,
you have 12 favorable outcomes.
There are a “total” number of 48 outcomes in the deck.
Therefore, the probability of being dealt a red face card = (12/48) = 1/4 or 25%.
2) What are the odds of being dealt a king?
There are 8 Kings in the deck and 48 “total” outcomes, right?
But…. the question doesn’t ask about probability, “rather what are the ODDS”.
Odds are defined as:
Favorable Outcomes : Unfavorable Outcomes
So we have 8 “favorable” outcomes and 40 “unfavorable” outcomes, right?
Thus, the odds are 8:40, which reduces to 1:5
Here’s a simplified example of odds:
Let’s say you flip a fair coin… What are the odds of it landing on heads?
There are two possible outcomes, one “favorable” and the other “unfavorable”.
So the odds of getting heads equals 1:1 (this is known as even odds).
Another example:
There are 50 marbles in a bag… 10 blue, 15 white and 25 green.
What are the odds of drawing a blue marble?
There’s 10 “favorable” marbles and (15 + 25) “unfavorable” marbles.
Odds = 10:40 = 1:4 (or one in four)
Remember: Odds are nothing more than a fancy label for ratios.
Good luck in your studies,
