i grew up playing a rummy game where you are dealt 7 cards and you have to make melds, but you hold them until you either have a run of 7 cards, a run and a set of 3/4 or a set of 3 and 4 cards. at that point you’re done and you count your cards like rummy – 2-9 = 5 points each, 10, J, Q, K = 10 and A = 15. we called this gin rummy, but it is much different than gin. we only played with one deck. does any one know the name of this game?

Resembles a card game I learned as kid. I knew the game as Rummy 500. You dealt the cards and played like Gin Rummy, except when you made a run in your hand of 3 cards or more, either in numerical sequence all the same suit (i.e. 4,5,6 of spade), or had the same card in different suit (i.e. three 3′s), you placed the run on the table in from of you. The person who got rid of all their cards first ended the game and the other person had to hand over the cards in their hand to add to your total. Cards are counted and a score is noted on a pad. First to reach 500 points won the match. Cards were counted at face value, a deuce was 2 points, an eight was 8 points, a picture card 10 points and an ace was either 15 or 1 point depending on how it was used: used in a run of Ace, two, three it counted as 1 point, all other as 15. Finally, it was possible to add to a run that your opponent had, for example, if you opponent placed a run of ace or hearts, spade and club on the table, if you have the ace of diamond, you can place it on your table to add to his run. Same goes for runs in sequence as well, i.e., a run of 4,5,6 of spade could be added to by you with a 3 of spade or a 7 of spade.

I hope this helps. I played many hours of this game with my mother when I was growing up — I have many fond memories.
