What card games were played in Colonial Maryland?

If the games were played by a certain gender or age group please specify. If it isn’t a common game, please specify the instructions

One thing that is important to point out is that, unlike today’s world, card games were meant for adults only, mostly men. Children usually did not participate in the activity. For women, it was considered unladylike to participate in games but some still did.
The poorer communities played bored games with cheap dirt boards such as backgammon, checkers, and etc etc…
Three of the most popular card games include loo, whist, and “at put”. Any game tables were usually in possession of the more wealthy since this was a great luxury of the time.

Loo is a short term for lanterloo. It was originally invented in England during the 17th century and came into the colonial U.S during the 18th century. This game inspired what is known today as euchre.
The point of this 3-8 player game (52 cards) is to capture as many face cards (Jack-Ace) as possible by declaring a trump and possessing the upperhand by working closely with your partner (across the table). Everybody takes turn to decide if they want to play or pass the hand to the next person so its fair. No number cards are used. I’ve played this game and it is very challenging.
Whist was known as the game of silence and it was strictly forbidden to give any hints about your hand. The only time anybody spoke was to bid tricks. This was the colonial version of spades. The only difference is that spades were not always the trump suit. The last card dealt (which went to the dealer) was flipped over and that determined the trump suit. Otherwise the rules were the same.
Poker was popular among the more poorer communities and was known as “at put” back then. Of course, poker is so popular now the rules wouldn’t have to be explained.

Something else about colonial times. Gambling was considered a great sin and brought condemnation to those who were caught since it can destroy one’s moral character and reputation. Yes, it was taken that seriously. So basically, people had to act very carefully when playing card games.
