in mtg, can i play an instant on my creatures after they’ve been blocked?

This is about the card game magic the gathering.

For instance, i have two 1/1 infect creatures on the battlfield, and my opponent has one 1/1. i attack, and he chooses to block one of the 1/1 infects and let the other one through. after he chooses which one to block, can i power up the one he DIDN’T block to give him, say, groundswell and primal blow, to knock him up to 10 power, killing my opponent?

is the damage already done to my opponent once he chooses his blockers, or can i play an instant before the damage gets to the player, but after he has chosen his blockers?

please explain with reference to the actual rules so i can understand this fully.

I will respond as a judge because I just got up and am too tired to find where in the rules it says this. There are 5 steps in combat, The Precombat Step, The Declare Attackers step, The Declare Blockers step, The Damage Step, and the Post Combat step. At the beginning of the DA, DB, and Damage steps attackers, blockers, and damage are done. These are things you cannot respond to (ie: you cannot respond to attackers being declared, damage being dealt, or blockers being declared during the combat phase). Between each step after the mandatory thing has been done, there is a chance to play instants or abilities.

This all means that you are permitted to play your instants and abilities to pump your creature after blockers are declared but before damage is dealt. Damage is not dealt automatically during the declare blockers step, it is dealt during the damage step.
