Is the usage of the proposition “of” correct in this sentence?
Through an instruction of a puzzle game for children it was written: “ …. now lift the disk off of any of the six cards on the ground … “
the more I read, the more I feel that after adding “off” to a verb it is not advisable to bring “of” to indicate direction, as “off” denotes “away , from , of “ per se.
Am I right or no? is it really ok we say such a thing …”lift something off of something” ?
Professional answers, referring to a grammatical point of view, will be appreciated.
That extra “of” is a (slang) American usage. It’s not correct in British English; we just say “lift the disk off…”.
