My Trading card game help! can anyone give me some basic rule help?

I am making a card game and i am really stuck on one important rule….. Its a typical mythical monsters type game where players summon monsters in order to reduce your opponents life to 0. The problem with my game is that i don’t know exactly how players could lose life?
here are 2 options:
-the Yu-Gi–Oh way – make direct attack on your opponent when they have no monsters out
-the Magic the gathering way – players make direct attack and your opponent chooses if they want to block your attack with their monsters.

I’m making a card game myself, and you know, I managed to get stuck on the same thing. I’m trying to design an original combat method but its not working out too well. However, if I ever manage to do so I chose to make it closer to Yu-Gi-Oh! combat than Magic. I like Yu-Gi-Oh! more than Magic (I like them both dont get me wrong) but in my opinion the battle system in yug is much more straight forward. The thing you have to take into account however is how the rest of your cards affect battle, I say tat because if you pay attention to each battle system, they each give the advantage to a different person. For example, in Yu-Gi-Oh! the attacker has the advantage and the defender trys to defend themself (go figure) with clever monster effects and trap cards, while Magic gives the advantage to the defender allowing them to choose which monsters defend, completely protecting weaker monsters from battle. So, it aall depends on who you waant your game’s advantage to go to during the battle phase. I personally perfer choosing my own attack target.
